Decide it before you build it.

Everything else here is execution. This is the part that decides what to execute — and it is where twenty-five years running marketing for Accenture, Meta, Samsung and the GSMA earns its keep.

What a day of strategy actually produces.

Most businesses we meet have never had anyone sit down and work out where the next fifty customers come from. There is a website, some ads, a bit of social, and none of it pointed at the same thing.

OneWhere the money is

Which jobs are worth having, which are not, and what one new customer is actually worth to you over a year. Most of this is arithmetic nobody has done.

TwoWhere they come from

The three or four routes that could realistically bring those customers, sized honestly — including the ones we do not sell.

ThreeWhat to do first

A ranked list with costs against it. You are free to take it and do it yourself; plenty of people do the first two things and come back for the third.

How this is different from a proposal.

A proposal is a sales document that costs you nothing and says what we would like to sell. This is paid work with a deliverable.

  • It has a priceFixed, before it starts. Nothing here is quoted on request.
  • It is yoursTake it to another agency, or do it in-house. No claw-back, no strings.
  • It includes the noWhere a channel will not work for you, it says so and why.
  • It is rankedNot twelve equal recommendations. First, second, third, with the reasoning.
  • It is costedEvery recommendation carries a rough number, including the ones we do not sell.
  • It is shortNobody acts on forty pages. Ten, in plain words.

The questions everybody asks.

Is this just a sales pitch I am paying for?

It would be worthless if it were, because you would discount everything in it. The audit routinely recommends things we do not sell, and says when a channel is not worth your money. If the honest answer is that your site is fine and you need to answer the phone faster, that is what it will say.

Can I just have the audit and go?

Yes, and some people do. The document is yours, it is ranked and costed, and any competent agency or in-house marketer can work from it.

What is database reactivation?

Contacting people who have already bought from you, or asked for a quote and never came back. It is the cheapest revenue in most businesses because the relationship already exists. We only contact people you have a lawful basis to contact — a bought list is not the same thing and we will not touch one.

Do you do fractional marketing director work?

Yes, for businesses past the point where the owner can hold it all. It is a retainer rather than a fixed piece, and it is arranged directly rather than bought off this page. Raise it on the call.

How is this reported?

One number at the end of every month — enquiries — with spend, calls and what we changed underneath it. A client who sees a number every month does not need a contract to stay.

The cheapest half hour you will spend on this.

A discovery call is free and often ends with us telling you not to buy anything yet. That is not a technique — it is just what the answer usually is.
